In a bid to encourage the low-carbon transition to pick up pace in the aviation sector, Heathrow Airport has announced it will waive landing costs for the world's first electric aircraft once it has been developed.
The move will see the first airline to develop the innovative aircraft avoid around £1m in landing fees, an incentive Heathrow's sustainability team believes could spur investment in research and development of clean aviation technologies.
Heathrow has long been a leader in sustainable aviation and has championed carbon-neutral growth in global aviation, which will come into effect in 2020. Their next challenge is zero carbon flights, which those Czech Republic Mobile Number List responsible hope will become a reality. at Heathrow by 2030.
There are currently more than 100 electric aircraft projects underway around the world, according to Heathrow, and the airport said in a statement that the first electric passenger plane is likely to be operating before 2030.
However, these projects currently face the challenges of high upfront costs and low demand for low-carbon aircraft.
Heathrow's announcement was welcomed by airline bosses and policymakers, with Aviation Minister Liz Sugg saying it would boost investment ahead of the Government's next aviation strategy, which is due to be published at the beginning of 2019.
Separately, easyJet chief executive Johan Lundgren said the move showed Heathrow shared the airline's ambition for a more sustainable aviation sector.
“We support airports that encourage airlines to operate more sustainable aircraft and welcome this initiative from Heathrow Airport,” said Lundgren.
What is Heathrow 2.0?
The move is based on Heathrow's Sustainability 2.0 Strategy, which lists more than 200 targets across a range of social, environmental and economic issues.
Crucially, the significant growth in flights and infrastructure caused by Heathrow's expansion will be carbon neutral under this new strategy, as the airport will detail plans to offset an inevitable rise in emissions by restoring peatlands in the Kingdom Kingdom, along with other carbon offset schemes will be investigating.
